A DVD-retrieval trip to Sarnath’s led to a dinner invite, so Stoob and I trooped happily through the mud of Pocket 40 to the bijou Banerjee residence, where India’s first graphic novelist forcefed Stoob Horlicks (this was because Stoob was allegedly ill, and Ovaltine was not available). We were talking about forthcoming projects and so forth, and Sarnath suddenly got all inspired and started drawing the characters I was talking about. What emerged from all this was a thoroughly enjoyable session that lasted late into the night, and a wad of indian superheroes drawn with black feltpen on A4 paper. Very nice. My favourite is a half-finished sketch of a Loki-lookalike black-sherwani-clad criminal mastermind who was supposed to have a falcon for a pet, but Sarnath suddenly realized he didnt know how to draw a falcon, so we have a bird-shaped blob on his sleeve with an arrow pointing into it and ‘Baajpakhi’ scrawled outside it in 4-year-old Bangla.

Won’t you tell us about your characters, Samit? We have a few of our own, my design partner and I.One of them is called ‘The Mercy Killer’ who has a rare disease because of which he must kill one man everyday (for bone marrow transfusion). So he chooses the saddest guy in town, relieves him of life, and then fights evil to purge himself of guilt.
