The funny thing in Bangla comics and also in many other articles/stories that are published serially (or,dharabahik bhabe)is the footnote “cholbe”, obviously indicating that the stuff is being produced serially and will continue in the next edition.
But, every time I see this, I can’t help thinking of it to be a somewhat unflattering commentary on the content-almost as if ‘cholbe’ means ‘hmm, will do,somehow’.
Posted by Rony | June 29, 2005, 9:19 amKicks ass. Brings back memories of self as a grimy seven-year old, reading the comics in dark corners of the house. Funy thing is, at the time I really couldn’t differentiate between the quality of these and the much jazzier amar chitra kathas.
Posted by newt! | June 29, 2005, 11:23 am‘Funy’! Unbelievable.
Posted by newt! | June 29, 2005, 11:24 amHey, have you heard of a Bengali comic character called Timpa? I don’t understand Bengali but the series was also translated into English. It was a take-off on Tintin.
Posted by The Bangalorean | June 29, 2005, 12:44 pmyour post somehow makes me remember the phrase that often surfaced in the footnotes of ‘chacha choudhury’s’ comics:
“chacha choudhurir buddhi computer er cheyeo prokhor”.
that signature itself i guess made it the ‘kick-assest’ strip of the country:D.
Posted by DD | June 29, 2005, 7:43 pmOh, Bantul is so cool! I remember going through my cousin’s stash of Bantul and Nonte-Phonte on summer vacations. And of course Betaal and Mandrake, and later, the Bangla editions of Tintin. I think every home I’ve ever been to in Bengal has some hand-me down Bantul comics tucked away between couch cushions. The memories!
