The Publishing Mysteries

I have discovered, to my surprise, that my book is out in Calcutta as well. Was in Starmark buying my mother books – and Unwaba wasn’t in the new releases section or displayed anywhere significant, of course – but yes, there it was, tucked away in a corner of the SF section.
Perhaps this is some new-fangled marketing strategy I would have understood had I stayed on in IIM. I remember explaining to Sarnath that Barn Owl was difficult to find despite the huge demand for it because it was about tracing a lost manuscript, and having to hunt around bookstores for it made the whole experience more rewarding. So don’t believe bookstore staff when they tell you my book hasn’t turned up – they’re playing a Game with you.

Update: Crossword, though, seems to be selling it the old-fashioned way, bless ’em. So if you’re in Cal, you know what to do. From the comments I learn it’s out in Chennai as well. Which is unambiguously a good thing.

  1. Just confirming…its out in Chennai. {Problem is: Me outta cash. 😦 Gotta borrow some. 🙂 }

The amazingly ridiculous thing is, you see Sam Bourne’s “The Last Testament” and Matthew Riley’s book (something…don’t remember name) in the New Arrivals. Not poor old SB. Hmmm. I mean…Matthew Riley’s probably the worst living author right now. Surely SB is not THAT bad.

  3. I pre-ordered the book from http://www.easternbookcorporation.com and they have shipped it on Dec 27 with comment “The book has been released by the publisher recently only.” I am eagerly waiting for the book.

  10. Hey, Samit. Yes!! I know, crossword(kolkata) is telling this kind of things. They told me some days ago, that they have “No idea” bout your book. After searching several small and well-known bookstores as well, I have finally got your book In Oxfordbookstore(Kolkata). When I first asked an employee of theirs bout your book, they showed me a book written by someone sallit someone Sumit Biswas or something. And after searching several racks, I got it from a shelf where a copy of it was stuffed and barely noticeable. But, anyway another employee of Oxford helped me, and I have unwaba revelations now.

Crosswords has Simoqin prophecies displayed in a lighted corner. But there is no sign of MAnticore’s secret(Though I already have it) or Unwaba revelations.

I don’t know when will your book be available at all the bookstores around the city. Let’s hope for the best.

  11. And yes!! Somedeb is quite right. They(Bookstores) have arranged the books in a wrong way, most of them atleast.

  13. The Book Cellar (Near Shoppers’ Stop, City Centre, Kolkata) has it, and quite proud of it, too!! 🙂 🙂 Starmark must’ve sold out, because all I found (even checked the “Cookery” section) was Simoqin…but eureka! I have the book!!

  14. Hi Samit,

I have just moved to U.S.A and not sure where I can get the new book here. Please advise.

You had done a great job in the first two books. Superb. I can’t overstate my appreciation for you.

  16. Hello Samit,
Another of your numerous fans from Calcutta. Finally found the book in the only place I was sure I’d get it–Book Cellar in City Centre. Its a tiny store but both the people who run it seem to know about books, for a change. They keep recommending new titles to me and the moment I said your name they handed Unwaba very enthusiastically. And Im devouring it at the moment.
    So what’s next after Gameworld?

  17. unwaba out in delhi ..saw it in midland and teksons…. strangely two days later it had disappeared…. om told me not yet released (strange)…. but they are people who will try and make you believe that “good omens” is a 2007 new publication because it is out in a new hardcover, even when show them the flyleaf saying first published in 1990… weirdoes

  18. Hi Samit,

Just updating. Found Unwaba Revelations in Landmark at Bangalore. Couldn’t find it at Crosswords or Reliance TimeOut here though. Looking forward to settle down for a good read now… 🙂

  19. I had to have my copy flown in from Mumbai to Chennai and it was every bit worth it. The ending wrapped up wonderfully with no loose ends left untied. A humorous read.
